Having been born and raised in Spain to Malian parents, Adama Traore has always been in a position of internal debate as to which country to represent at global level.

Wolves winger Adama Traore has been handed his first call-up to the Spain squad for their upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers.

Rodrigo pulled out after suffering an injury during Valencia's 2-0 win over Granada earlier on Saturday.

Traore's surprise selection for the Spanish national team was confirmed by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

Adama is 23 years old and was poised to play for Mali before Spain called him up.

Spain-born Traore had been tipped to switch worldwide allegiance to his parents' homeland of Mali, despite representing the Spanish under-21 side.

Traore came through Barcelona's youth academy but only made one La Liga appearance for the first team, moving to English side Aston Villa in 2015.

Spain have Euro2020 qualifiers with Malta and Romania later this week.
