On his way to his 34th hat-trick, Messi scored his 51st and 52nd free kicks which shows that he is also one of the best free-kickers in the world at the moment if not the best of the lot.

The three points will come as a huge relief to Valverde after last week's banana skin defeat to Levante, as well as Barca's midweek Champions League stalemate against Slavia Prague. But the Catalan giants bounced back in style, with Messi leading the way with a superb hat-trick.

Both Blaugrana talisman Messi and Ronaldo have now netted 34 trebles in Spain's top tier, although the former Real Madrid forward, having previously played for Sporting CP and Manchester United before joining Juventus a year ago, had a shorter stay in the division.

But Messi restored Barca's lead right before halftime with a stunning free kick of his own, curling the ball into the top corner.

Moments later Messi struck again, stepping up after Frenkie de Jong was fouled and sending a carbon copy of his first-half free-kick looping beyond the diving Blanco to complete his hat-trick.

But with Ronaldo now plying his trade in Serie A with Juventus, the coast is clear for Messi to surpass his longtime rival and stand alone as the most prolific hat-trick scorer in La Liga history.

"It was really difficult for us in the first half, with their high press that made it hard for us to play out and we didn't have much rhythm in our play".

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde also paid tribute to his matchwinning star.

"My future at Barcelona does not worry me", Valverde said, as per Marca.

"He dominates the art of free kick taking, and opponents know they can not afford to give away fouls near our area". If they do, we try to take advantage.

"We had a damaging defeat the other day and we needed a win tonight".
