Xi given warm welcome in India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Mamallapuram right now for an informal summit with Chinese president Xi Jinping, released a video of his morning walk ritual on his Twitter profile, only that the prime minister could be seen cleaning the beach alongside.

Modi and Xi strolled along a pristine Bay of Bengal beach and held one-on-one talks from chairs overlooking the ocean before their delegations sat down to official negotiations at the historic resort town of Mahabalipuram, south of Chennai.

The Indian foreign secretary said that both India and China also supported the rule of law in trading regimes and back the World Trade Organisation mechanism.

The Prime Minister said that, in the Wuhan Summit, both the countries decided not to allow any differences to become disputes and be prudently managed.

Modi said the Wuhan summit had given "increased stability and fresh momentum to our relationship".

The focus of the meeting is likely to find ways to improve people-to-people contact, enhance trade and on how to maintain peace and tranquillity along the 3, 500-kilometre long India-China border.

Jinping after hearing Modi - at a bilateral delegation level meeting at Kovalam - on trade deficit said that China is ready to take honest action in this regard, and to discuss in a very concrete way how to reduce the trade deficit, Gokhale told newspersons at the end of the summit between.

Relations were ruffled further in August when India revoked the special status of the Himalayan territory of Kashmir, angering both Pakistan, which claims the region, and its all-weather ally China.

India and China fought a border war in 1962.

Jinping said that both China and India will discuss this further, and India's concerns will be addressed.

In 2017, a standoff occurred at the Doklam border as India resisted a road being built in the region by China, and earlier this month, Chinese and Indian military clashed again when the Chinese People's Liberation Army objected to Indian patrols in Ladakh.

India plans to run 5G trials soon and Huawei is expected to team up with Airtel and Vodafone for this.

The United States has been lobbying strongly against letting Huawei spread its influence because of its alleged close links to the Beijing government. "We have a made a wise decision on informal summits".

Modi and Xi resolved to work together in facing the challenges of radicalization and terrorism besides emphasizing on expanding trade and investment, Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale told reporters. Previously, Modi posted a few tweets in Chinese after arriving in Chennai, saying he hoped the meeting with Xi would lead to stronger bilateral ties.
