Matteo Berrettini is up next for Zverev, who reflected on a remarkable end to the second set, when he was on the brink of a far more straightforward success.

For the first time since the tournament's inaugural edition in 2009, none of the "Big Four" - Djokovic, Rafa Nadal, Federer and Andy Murray - are in contention for the trophy.

The 21-year-old came into the match having sealed his place in next month's season-ending ATP Finals and celebrated with his second career win over Djokovic in three meetings.

So, Tsitsipas and Zverev join the two straight-set victors, Daniil Medvedev and Matteo Berrettini, in the semi-finals to complete a quartet of "next-gen" players remaining in the draw, with Saturday's semi-finals getting underway at 930 United Kingdom time.

"I didn't make him defend enough". "It's exciting. They're great".

Four-time champion Djokovic was denied back-to-back titles after his Japan Open Tennis Championships triumph last weekend as Tsitsipas struck 34 winners in a pulsating quarter-final in Shanghai, setting up a last-four contest with Medvedev.

The young Greek made similar comments after turfing the Serb Djokovic out of the quarter-finals in three sets. It was an outstanding match between two elite players but Tsitsipas showed his quality to cause a major upset.

In fact, I think Medvedev is a decent price at [1.50]. The most recent match between these two players was earlier in the season at the Monte Carlo Masters where Daniil Medvedev won in straight sets.

Tsitsipas advanced with a win over Djokovic.

Medvedev, who will face Tsitsipas in Saturday's semifinals, is one match away from reaching a sixth consecutive tournament final.

Medvedev is 28-3 in matches played since the summer hard court swing started after Wimbledon.

Prior to Friday's match, Fognini said Medvedev was one of the most risky players to face.

Asked if someone else other than Federer, Nadal or Djokovic can finally win a Grand Slam next year, he said: "I think so, to be honest".

"If some top players like Fabio can say this about me, shows that I'm on the good way, I'm playing good, and it's not easy to play against me", Medvedev said. The head-to-head is obviously a great thing to have, but more importantly for me is it was a match to kind of maybe turn my year around a little bit, and the race to London is also very important.
