At least one person was killed and several others injured after a crane collapsed at the under-construction Hard Rock Hotel in New Orleans, officials said.

At least 18 people were taken to the hospital.

Authorities said there were no reports of people injured on the ground.

The New Orleans Fire Department Chief Tim McConnell said they received a call about the fallen building around 9:14 a.m. Saturday morning.

McConnell urged the public to avoid the area and said another collapse was "absolutely" possible because of how unstable the building is.

McConnell told reporters that it's still a very risky situation and another collapse is possible.

"It's still a very risky situation", he said.

Several construction workers had to run to safety as the Hard Rock Hotel, which has been under construction for the last several months, came crashing down.

The Canal Street construction of the hotel in downtown New Orleans was announced in February 2018.

Construction plans for the 350-room hotel include a 12,000 square foot event space, two ballrooms and a residential space, according to a news release. The rubble slid off the side of the building in insane video captured by onlookers in the street. One former theater hadn't been touched since before Hurricane Katrina hit the city.

"We're praying for the individuals who remain unaccounted for", John Bel Edwards, the governor of Louisiana, said at the press conference.
