While nothing is official yet, a new report reveals Sony is considering taking Masters of the Universe right to streaming to avoid a repeat of the Men of Black incident.

Sony's "He-Man" reboot is to drop on Netflix. This is because they fear the film might not perform strongly at the box office, and so by making a deal with Netflix, the studio will not have to worry about selling enough cinema tickets to recuperate marketing and production costs.

Meanwhile, He-Man spin-off property She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is entering its fourth season on Netflix, while a new direct Masters of the Universe revival series titled Revelation is also in development for Netflix.

If we're being honest, selling the Masters of the Universe reboot to Netflix wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. "As such, Netflix would likely have first op to drop the movie".

Though the movie is still scheduled for a March 2021 release, Sony is considering selling it to Netflix so that they won't risk as much money if/when it bombs.

Discussions between Sony and the streaming service are still in the early stages.

A source told THR that Sony has "this backlog of films that isn't going to get made and released theatrically", and is looking to offload some of them, adopting a "Let's join 'em, we can't beat 'em" attitude to the streaming platform. And indie studio A24 inked a multi-year agreement in 2018 to produce a slate of films for Apple. Studios have been discovering that very few movies - except maybe superhero movies - end up scoring big at the box office.

Similarly, Warner Bros. chose to forgo a theatrical release for Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle and instead sold the film to Netflix, which made sense, seeing as recent fantasy adventure films released by the Warner Bros., such as Pan and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, had both bombed. At one point, McG was announced as a director for the film. Adam and Aaron Nee recently took over the reigns, with a script from Iron Man scribes Matt Holloway and Art Marcum.
