Ted Cruz (R) past year - made headlines early in the evening Thursday when he proudly announced from the debate stage: "Hell yes, we're going to take your AR-15".

"The high-impact, high velocity round, when it hits your body shreds everything insider your body because it was created to do that, so that you would bleed to death on the battlefield", O'Rourke said to raucous applause.

After the debate, Briscoe Cain, who represents a district in the Texas statehouse, tweeted at O'Rourke: "My AR is ready for you Robert Francis", a reference to the candidate's given first name.

An outspoken supporter of Second Amendment rights, Cain was kicked out of the Texas Democratic Party convention in 2018 after he showed up with what appeared to be a sidearm and began handing out fake yard signs that said "This home is a gun-free safe space", the Star-Telegram reported.

He received praise from his fellow Democratic contenders for his actions following the shooting in El Paso.

During the debate, Cain's tweet went viral, with thousands of replies.

Citing the recent mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio, the former Democratic congressman said the federal government must seize certain semi-automatic rifles to prevent further tragedy. Cain responded "You're an idiot". Clearly, you shouldn't own an AR-15-and neither should anyone else.

The rest of Cain's Twitter account, including his response calling O'Rourke a child for labeling the tweet a "death threat", remained online Thursday night.

Other Twitter users posted that they had reported it and two people on the O'Rourke campaign told CBS News they checked in about it with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Cain responded, "You're a child Robert Francis" at O'Rourke.

Speaking to reporters after the debate, O'Rourke said that Cain's comment "sure reads" like a death threat. The campaign declined to offer any additional comment, including any response to Twitter's decision to take down Cain's original tweet.

O'Rourke has argued for a mandatory buyback of assault weapons, among other gun control measures.
