Musk said video of the new lap, which will reveal the official time, will be posted soon.

Watch the lap recorded by the Model S below. Musk tweeted on Wednesday that the sedan set the fastest time for a four-door around California's Laguna Seca.

Though Musk brushes off the idea that the scrapping of a record-attempt was his idea or due to needing time to "review and tune" the Model S in question, the real reason is that he never had secured anything and went off half-cocked.

Musk revealed the new powertrain will hit production next year and will be available as a next-level option for the Model S, Model X and the new Roadster, but not the Model 3 or Y. Well, Tesla takes the names for its acceleration modes from the classic comedy Spaceballs, and as you can see in the clip below, the only thing that's faster than "ludicrous" speed is "plaid". Given the length of the track, it presents a much greater challenge than Laguna Seca, especially for high-performance electric cars, which are prone to overheating and power loss. When that vehicle set a new Nurburgring Nordschleife EV lap record of 7:42, Tesla's Elon Musk was quick to respond that their own 'Ring attempt was coming (an attempt that Porsche eagerly welcomes).

According to Musk, the car's already there, but there won't be any record-breaking attempts this week as further tune-ups are necessary.
