The world last saw former Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher just before his life-altering skiing accident almost six years ago.

F1 legend Michael Schumacher is reportedly conscious after going through a stem-cell treatment in Paris, according to French newspaper La Parisien.

Schumacher, who suffered brain damage in a skiing accident nearly six years ago, was admitted to the Georges-Pompidou hospital in the French capital on Monday.

The French newspaper said the former champion would undergo treatment based on stem-cell transfusion by French surgeon Philippe Menasche.

"Yes, I can assure you that he is conscious", the French daily quoted a nurse working at the Georges Pompidou Hospital.

Le Parisien, citing sources it did not name, said Schumacher has been treated at least twice previously at the Georges-Pompidou hospital, admitted each time under a false name and treated by a small medical team.

The German is expected to be discharged from the hospital in France today after having the groundbreaking surgery.

He said: "They asked if something could be done (for Schumacher)".

Representatives and family members of Schumacher have not publicly commented on the treatment.

He later emerged from the coma and since September 2014 the racing champion has been receiving specialist care at his home in Lausanne, Switzerland.

"You can be sure that he is in the very best of hands and that we are doing everything humanly possible to help him". To this day, the German driver holds the record for the most Championship victories as well as the most race wins, with 91.
