Drape's article said that a handful of racing officials, and people connected to the horse, knew about the failed drug test.

Champion racehorse Justify failed a drug test shortly before winning the American Triple Crown in 2018, the New York Times reported on Wednesday.

Instead of disqualification, the CHRB took more than one month to review the results, affording time for Justify to become the first Triple Crown victor since American Pharoah and 13th in the sport's history.

In an article posted on its website, the newspaper said Justify, who was under the stewardship of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, tested positive to the banned substance scopolamine after winning the Santa Anita Derby on April 7.

"There was no way that we could have come up with an investigative report prior to the Kentucky Derby", Baedeker said, per the Times.

Previously, failed drug tests that uncover scopolamine in horse racing have resulted in disqualifications, prize forfeiture, fines, and suspensions. "That's impossible. Well, that's not impossible, that would have been careless and reckless for us to tell an investigator what usually takes you two months, you have to get done in five days, eight days".

The Times also reports that they didn't find any evidence of tampering or involvement by Justify's owners in any document they reviewed.

"I think it has to come from intentional intervention", Sams told the Times. Members of the board, including chairman Chuck Winner, reportedly own an interest in horses trained by Baffert.

Baffert was found to have administered thyroid hormone thyroxine to the horses despite there being no evidence of hypothyroidism that the hormone is meant to treat. There is no violation of any rules.

However, the New York Times alleges the CHRB did not follow its usual process of "filing a public complaint" on the matter and "made a series of decisions behind closed doors" to drop the case.

Justify's incredible Triple Crown triumph previous year may be tainted.
