EW's review of Joker took the unusual step of not grading the film, noting, "entertainment doesn't exist in a vacuum, and a movie with the message this one hammers home again and again - that life is nasty and short; that no one cares; that you might as well burn it all down - feels too volatile, and frankly too scary, to separate from the very real violence committed by young men like Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck in America nearly every day".

Phoenix was one of two actors presented with the TIFF Tribute Actor Award, following an introduction from fellow actor Willem Dafoe - which Phoenix also interrupted with a surprise appearance. And he said, 'You're going to start acting again.

The film - and Phoenix's performance - have already drawn breathless Oscar predictions and controversy in equal measure.

Hailed as "sensational" and "unnerving" by some critics, it has raised concern for others that its depiction of mental illness and violence could prove "incendiary". "In fact, I don't care".

"When I was 15 or 16 my brother River [Phoenix] came home from work and he had a VHS copy of a movie called "Raging Bull" and he sat me down and made me watch it".

"He didn't ask me, he told me. And I am indebted to him for that because acting has given me such an incredible life".

River, one of the promising stars in Hollywood and a teen idol, died of a drug overdose on the sidewalk outside a nightclub in Hollywood at the age of 23. "Joaquin was very intense in what he was doing, as it should be, as he should be", said Robert De Niro, who plays a self-referential talk show host.

Phillips, previously known for frat house comedies including the "Hangover" trilogy and "Road Trip", bristled at suggestions the movie was a major departure for him. "But in the long run, I think he got it and appreciated it".

Earlier on Monday "The Laundromat" - Netflix's film about the "Panama Papers" global corruption scandal - arrived in Toronto.

He joked: "I don't talk to them or see them".
