This was the first win for Williams as they met at the Rogers Cup quarterfinals.

The match marked the first time the two had played against each other since Williams' defeat in the U.S. Open final, according to the New York Times.

Cape Town - Serena Williams defeated Naomi Osaka in their Rogers Cup quarter-final on Friday as the pair met for the first time since their infamous US Open final a year ago.

The U.S. Open championship match in September 2018 between Williams and Osaka was marred by a verbal altercation between Williams and chair umpire Carlos Ramos, who gave the 23-time Grand Slam champion three separate on-court violations.

Williams will face the victor of the quarter-final match between Simona Halep and Marie Bouzková, in the last four.

Osaka had won her previous two matches against Williams in straight sets, but the 37-year-old secured a 6-3 6-4 victory over the Japanese star on Friday.

Osaka called Williams, 16 years her senior, her "tennis mom" prior to the match, to which Williams responded: "I'd say more or less tennis grandma".

Osaka said Williams played "amazing, which is what she does", and the victor agreed her level had improved from the pair of 2018 defeats.

Sharing how her mental approach was heading into the match, Serena added: "It's definitely good for me, you know, to keep the competition and, you know, to have players like her who can, you know, play really well. I'm just overall a little bit better", Williams said. And, yeah, so I know her game. "I just wanted to do the best I could today".

I go into every match thinking I can do it, but, you know, sometimes that doesn't happen.

Humbled this week in Toronto, Osaka acknowledged this loss belatedly provided the experience she had always anticipated when facing Williams.

The 21-year-old was assured of replacing the Australian Ashleigh Barty, who lost on Tuesday, as the world No. 1 after tournament third seed Karolina Pliskova lost 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 to Canada's Bianca Andreescu in the last eight.

"I'm not really mad at this", Osaka said.

The 19-year-old Andreescu, from nearby Mississauga, is returning from a right shoulder injury that sidelined her since the French Open in May. "We haven't played since NY, which was a really good match for her". Andreescu will face American Sofia Kenin, a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 victor over sixth-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.

Andreescu will face Sofia Kenin after the American upset Ukrainian sixth seed Elina Svitolina 7-6 (7-2) 6-4.
