In a speech at the Kennedy Space Center July 20, Vice President Mike Pence, flanked by the Orion spacecraft being built for the Artemis 1 uncrewed mission, said that assembly of the spacecraft was now "complete" and ready for final testing.

The building is now home to NASA's Orion crew capsule, the spacecraft created to carry astronauts back to the moon by 2024 in what Bridenstine calls the Artemis program, named after the Greek goddess and twin sister of Apollo. "Just as we once set our sights to be the first to land on the moon, let us bring that same sense of commitment to meeting the other challenges facing our nation".

On Saturday, Pence, Aldrin and Armstrong's older son, Rick, visited the Apollo 11 launch pad, now leased by SpaceX, and the building now named for Armstrong where the astronauts suited up for liftoff on July 16, 1969.

"Artemis 1 will launch NASA's Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System (SLS) rocket around the Moon to test the system and pave the way for landing the first woman and the next man on the Moon in five years, as well as future missions to Mars", NASA press release reads.

The tapes have a combined run time of 2 hours and 24 minutes, and they show the entirety of the moon walk as seen by the Mission Control staff, from the first walk to the phone call with then-President Richard Nixon, the auction house said. "It's coming back with a vengeance", Bridenstine said at Saturday's ceremony.

"Or, even going to another orbiting satellite, not necessarily in the Jupiter orbit because the radiation field is so intense - but perhaps out to Saturn".

"It seems to me, Mars direct", Mr. Trump said.

He didn't give them much thought until he found out in 2008 that NASA was trying to locate its original tapes for the 40th anniversary of the moon landing, Sotheby's said.

During his interview with Aldrin, Pence expressed confidence that Trump would follow through with the program despite his stated frustration with NASA's decision to use the moon as a jumping-off point to get to Mars. "But in the Artemis program we go to the moon sustainably, and this time we have a very diverse, highly qualified astronaut corps that includes women".

"I'm especially grateful today to be joined today by some of the greatest champions of American leadership in space in the Congress", Pence said, recognizing those Republican members of Congress in attendance.

He says the moon is the farthest we've gone, yet it is so relatively close to us.

"We are truly over the moon about today's outstanding result".

The 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing is celebrated in a show projected on the Washington Monument in Washington, DC.
