Newcastle are set to fly to China on Saturday without a manager as they attempt to reach agreement with Sheffield Wednesday for a compensation package for Steve Bruce.

Bruce, 58, is the clear favourite to replace Benítez, who departed St James' Park when his contract expired on 30 June.

Born near Newcastle and a boyhood Magpies fan, he is now on Sheffield Wednesday's pre-season tour of Portugal.

The Star journalist Dom Howson relayed on his personal Twitter account, that the former Sunderland manager confirmed he has attended a meeting with Newcastle officials, and that his future is now in the hands of the two clubs.

Toon owner Mike Ashley has worked out an incentive-driven salary which will see Bruce collect an extra payment for every place Newcastle finish above the bottom three. For me, at this particular moment, there is nothing really to talk about until the two clubs reach some sort of compromise. It has happened so quickly that I have to take stock of the whole situation. "We'll see what develops over the next 24 to 48 hours".

The majority of fans in attendance gave Bruce a huge reception, with chants throughout from the away end.

Bruce has won promotion to the Premier League on four occasions during a managerial career which has taken him from Sheffield United to Huddersfield, Crystal Palace, Birmingham, Wigan, Sunderland, Hull and Aston Villa.
