The two-time men's Wimbledon singles champion duly signed up to play with Serena Williams in the mixed doubles ahead of this morning's 11am deadline, with older brother Jamie joining Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the same competition.

Murray's mother Judy feels Williams and her son could be a flawless mixed doubles team.

"I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for her - I told her she was so inspiring and I've always wanted to tell her that but I've never had the guts to before". "It's always hard to tell in mixed doubles because you only have them in the grand slams, so nobody gets the chance to specialise in it or play it a lot".

The Scot, who is playing doubles at the All England Club as he tries to regain full match fitness after hip surgery in January, was flooded with offers after he revealed world No. 1 and French Open champion Ash Barty had turned him down.

"It [would] be a positive thing for tennis, if more guys were playing doubles", he said.

Murray and Williams are not seeded for the event and will face 14th seeds Fabrice Martin and Raquel Atawo in the next round if they win.

Williams hinted over the weekend that she would consider featuring in the mixed doubles and suggested that something was brewing after her 6-2 7-5 singles win Tuesday in the first round against Italian qualifier Giulia Gatto-Monticone. "Any coach will tell you, if the male player can keep the lady smiling, then (anything is possible)", Judy Murray said on Wednesday. He really speaks up about women's issues no matter what.

The whole day was, she said, "a dream come true", filled with smiles and tears and goose bumps. Murray and Feliciano Lopez won the doubles title at Queen's Club last month in the Scotsman's return to competition. I don't know if she really thought so, but she was so nice. This was definitely the first time I ever cried after winning a match.

She also has two Grand Slam mixed doubles crowns in her collection, including one at Wimbledon, which she won with Belarusian Max Mirnyi in 1998.

Murray also plays men's doubles Thursday with Frenchman Pierre Hugues Herbert.
