The Red Sox issued a health update on Ortiz on behalf of his wife, Tiffany. "David is recovering well and is in good spirits".

Ortiz was shot at a bar in his native Dominican Republic last month.

"He went on about Devers for about 15 minutes", said Red Sox president Sam Kennedy, who visited Ortiz at Massachusetts General Hospital last Saturday.

Ortiz was shot in the lower back as he sat at an outdoor table at the Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo.

"We continue to be incredibly appreciative of his kindness and compassion shown to David and to our entire family during this hard time".

Ortiz has now undergone a 3rd surgery following complications from the injuries suffered during the shooting.

According to Dominican authorities, the shooting was a case of mistaken identity and Ortiz's friend was the intended target of the attack. He was then transported to Boston.

Ortiz has yet to publicly comment on the incident and remains in care at Mass.

Ortiz played 20 Major League Baseball seasons before retiring after the 2016 season. He was a 10-time All-Star and led the Red Sox to three World Series champions in his 14 seasons in Boston.
