The temperature was warm, above 80 even as the sun set, but not as steaming as Manhattan can get in July.

Parts of midtown Manhattan in New York City were hit with a power outage on Saturday evening, causing Times Square billboards and to go dark, disrupting subway service and cutting out traffic lights.

Without traffic lights, some New Yorkers stepped in to help, as captured on social media.

The Daily Beast reports that the source of the outage is a blown transformer at West End Avenue and West 64th Street, but neither ConEd, NYPD or NYFD have confirmed what caused the break in service.

The outage was having a widespread effect on the NY subway system, which was experiencing power outages in its stations, the agency managing the trains said.

Several Broadway shows canceled their Saturday night performances, including Hamilton, Hadestown, Aladdin, Frozen, Ain't Too Proud to Beg and The Cher Show.

Emily Totero, 30, planned to bring out-of-town guests to see "Moulin Rouge". But once they got to the theater district, they saw the power go out.

People in Hell's Kitchen began directing traffic themselves as traffic lights and walking signs went dark.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) advised travellers to avoid sub-surface trains, after some passengers were stranded below ground for over an hour. The Con Ed power outage map, which showed more than 45,400 customers were without power, indicated the outage stretched from the far west side to Fifth Avenue.

Mayor Bill de Blasio, who was campaigning for president in Iowa on Saturday, tweeted that the police and fire departments and other city agencies were working to respond a manhole fire that caused the outage.
