That's when police say a 54-year-old man entered the auto and took off. The man ran off but was caught by the father. The police have been examining video footage to identify those involved in the assault of Hood.

The boyfriend, also 25, pulled the suspect from the auto and a short foot chase ensued, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told WPVI.

"They were able to pull this auto thief out of the vehicle". The auto thief only drove half a block before he became stuck in traffic. "And the boyfriend caught up to him and there was some sort of physical struggle that ensued", Small said.

'Then other males from the neighborhood intervened and began punching and kicking the male who took the vehicle to the point where he was rendered unconscious'.

The boyfriend, the father, pursued the auto on foot, and caught up with the thief and kidnapper about a block away in traffic.

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small, (pictured), said that the auto thief fled on foot.

"We are working on finding out who these other men were that also assaulted the individual that subsequently died", said Chief Inspector Scott Small from the Philadelphia Police Department.

The man was taken to hospital with severe head and facial injuries.

"I'm not a fan of street justice", Philadelphia Police Capt. Jason Smith said at a press conference Friday.

The couple who were questioned by police are both aged 25. No arrests have been made, he said.

The children were placed with family members, while their parents remained in custody.

The city's medical examiner's office is yet to determine how the suspected carjacker died.
