It's also worth noting that Amazon Music Unlimited is cheaper than most rival services. Spotify still dominates from a subscriber number perspective, of course.

Amazon Music's growth is largely because of Alexa and Echo devices.

Amazon Music Unlimited was the fastest-growing music service over the last year according to new data that shows its subscriber base grew by 70%, even though it launched a year after Apple Music.

In comparison, Apple Music has around 50 million subscribers and Spotify leads the way with 100 million subscribers after growing its base by 25 percent previous year. The service now has approximately 32 million subscribers.

"Amazon is the dark horse [in music]", said Mark Mulligan, an analyst at Midia Research. That's especially true if you have Amazon Prime (it's only $8 per month for Prime subscribers) or if you only use an Amazon smart speaker to listen ($4 per month), which may also help the service grow. If you are a Amazon Prime user, you can get an individual subscription at $8/month.

"We're not battling for the same customers as everyone else", Amazon's Steve Boom confirmed. "For the industry to reach its full potential, we can't just look at 15- to 22-year-olds", he added. Amazon has a long history of selling CDs, but the company was late to the streaming sphere, launching Amazon Music in autumn 2016 - eight years after Spotify premiered.
