It's the worst kept secret in football: Matthijs de Ligt will play for Juventus next season.

The 19-year-old had attracted interest from several of Europe's powerhouses this summer but is now on the verge of completing his move to the Italian champions.

The clubs were eager to finalise the transfer before the Eredivisie side head to Austria for pre-season training.

De Ligt is set to sign a five-year contract with Juventus and will receive a salary of around 14 million euros gross per year, reports Holland's Algemeen Dagblad newspaper, which also confirmed the agreement between the two clubs.

However, current Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars was unaware of any such agreement and stuck to a much higher valuation of the Dutchman.

Despite interest from Manchester United, Barcelona and Liverpool, de Ligt's preference was always to join Juventus.
