The Indian team's alternative strategy in the absence of an injured Shikhar Dhawan will be put through a stern test by a feisty New Zealand attack ready to ask a few probing questions if weather does not play spoilsport in their World Cup encounter in Nottingham on Thursday.

"Mr Dhawan sustained an injury on the back of his left hand in the region between the index finger and thumb during the CWC 2019 league match against Australia", added BCCI. He was eventually out after scoring 117 off 109 balls.

Dhawan sustained a thumb injury while batting against Australia, will be under observation, according to a statement released by the BCCI team management on Tuesday. He, however, had not come out to field at all with Ravindra Jadeja taking his place in the field.

New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor says it is too early to pick favourites for the World Cup, with most of the 10 teams firmly in the race to reach the semi-finals.

India will definitely be desperate to see Dhawan recovering as quickly as possible. Dhawan was the top score in the last two Champions Trophy held in England. With Dhawan out of action now, KL Rahul looks set to open alongside Rohit Sharma in the upcoming games.
