In-form India opener Shikhar Dhawan was Tuesday (June 11) ruled out of at least two World Cup matches after his left thumb was found to have a hairline fracture, dealing a major blow to one of the top title contenders at the showpiece.

Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan had suffered an injury on his thumb while batting against Australia. He was hit on his left thumb by a delivery from Nathan Coulter-Nile early in his innings and needed medical attention. Reports earlier suggested that the southpaw could miss nearly 3 weeks of action. However, latest report from Cricbuzz suggests Shikhar Dhawan will remain under observation. Instead, the Indian team has kept the opening batsman under observation. And Sanjay Bangar has now stated that any call on Dhawan can be taken only after 10-12 days.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India did not reveal the extent of Dhawan´s injury, but said the left-hander will stay with the team after rumours he would have to be replaced.

"Rishabh Pant is being flown in from India as a cover (for Shikhar Dhawan) at the request of the team management", a senior BCCI official now in England told PTI on Wednesday. And looks BCCI have heard those pleas as they have asked the wicketkeeper-batsman to flow down to England as cover for Dhawan.

Cricket analysts are of the opinion that K.L. Rahul will now be the opening partner of Rohit Sharma with Dinesh Karthick and Vijay Shankar bolstering up the middle order.
