It was a case of goodbye yellow brick road, hello Cannes red carpet as Elton John made an appearance at the film festival as part of his extended global farewell tour.

Elton John biopic Rocketman premiered in Cannes last night, with both its star, Taron Egerton, and subject in attendance.

But donning heart-shaped, red-tinted glasses he gave the movie his hearty blessing on Thursday. However it is hoped that the singer is will perform at a private aftershow party following the premiere.

John has praised Egerton's portrayal in the film, particularly Egerton's decision to perform all the songs himself.

"You step into the surreal a little bit, step into a world that's a little more heightened and I think the audience will really love that", says Jamie Bell, who plays Bernie Taupin, John's long-time lyricist. "Even if the movie doesn't make one penny at the box office, which will kill Jim Gianopulos, it is the movie I wanted to make".

Rocketman hits theaters on May 31. The Guardian acknowledged that Rocketman "had the burden of following or living up to Elton John's sensational songs, the masterpieces which each seem like mini-movies in themselves". "It's not [Queen biopic] Bohemian Rhapsody where the brilliant Rami Malek, who played Freddie [Mercury], lip synched". But Rocketman is R-rated and less cautious about its star's homosexuality.

The music legend's husband - who produced "Rocketman" - has also shared his thoughts on the final product. It grossed US$903 million worldwide.

The performance was one for the ages, with John playing the piano and singing along as Egerton belted out the iconic track.
