According to both Bob McKenzie of TSN and Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, the Buffalo Sabres are planning to hire Ralph Krueger as the next head coach. The Oilers finished that shortened season 19-22-7 and did not qualify for the playoffs.

Krueger, who was chairman of the Southampton Football Club in the English Premier League for five years before leaving the job April 12, was coach of the Edmonton Oilers in 2012-13. The Winnipeg native has spent most of his career coaching overseas.

Krueger also coached Team Europe at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, when it lost in the championship game to Team Canada.

"It's disappointing to see a player like Brandon get hurt at his first world championship", said Ron Francis, a member of the management group with Canada's National Men's Team.
