"This morning, I informed Mike that he was being relieved of his duties as General Manager of the team, effective immediately", Jets chairman Christopher Johnson said in a release.

NY made the borderline shocking announcement Tuesday that it fired general manager Mike Maccagnan as well as VP of player personnel Brian Heimerdinger. I will start a search for our new General Manager immediately.

"Mike helped to execute the strategic vision of the organization during the last four seasons and especially the past few months", Johnson said.

If you're a NY sports fan who puts your support behind the Knicks and Jets, well, you've had better days.

He also spearheaded the Jets' free-agency shopping spree, which cost about $100 million in cap space for 2019, and also made six vital NFL Draft picks, including taking Quinnen Williams with the No. 3 selection. There were some rumors, however, that there was tension between Maccagnan and Gase - which both denied. We have discussion on everything.

Vice president of player personnel Mike Heimerdinger was also fired, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Maccagnan, who was hired as GM in 2015, was not relieved of his duties this past offseason when coach Todd Bowles was sacked - leading many to assume that Maccagnan's job was not in jeopardy.

Gase watched as Maccagnan ran the free agency and drafts for the Jets but now we have to wonder what input Gase had then and if Maccagnan was only a figurehead during that time period.

Maccagnan had two years left on his contract.

One day after the Knicks missed out on winning the National Basketball Association draft lottery, the Jets reminded the sports world why they continue to be a laughingstock of the NFL.

Reports indicate Gase is interested in bringing in Eagles vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas, with whom he worked in Chicago.

Gase, the former Bears offensive coordinator, was sacked as head coach of the Dolphins on December 31 after two seasons in Miami.
