A student who was injured when she fell from the Fordham University bell tower has died. Given that the tower is off-limits to students and consequently locked at night, school officials are investigating how Monfries and others have gained access, hopefully eliminating any future forays into the tower by other students who may seek to ascend in search of social media content.

Friends previously said she was eager to get a good picture of the city skyline to post on her Instagram page.

Monfries, a journalism student set to graduate in the coming weeks, tripped on debris on the spiral staircase, fell 30 feet from one level to another, and later died. She was pronounced dead in St. Barnabas Hospital on Sunday evening. "As the clock tower is a rather risky, and therefore secured, area of campus, students would likely face disciplinary action if they entered it".

In a statement to INSIDER, a spokesperson for Fordham said there have been "no other falls in or from Keating Tower".

Police said that they were alerted to the incident, on the campus of Fordham University in the Bronx, at about 3:20 a.m. Sunday. Her family has been notified but her name was not yet released. "They are always doing some kind of cleaning or renovation".

'They were like, "We're seniors, let's go!".

The fall knocked her unconscious and when paramedics arrived, they struggled to her out because the staircase was too narrow for them to maneuver the stretcher she was on.

Fire Department sources confirmed that Monfries suffered serious injuries to her head and pelvis.

According to the university's website, Fordham University is a Jesuit, Catholic institution focused on instilling students with "wisdom, experience, morality, critical thinking and creative problem-solving". "If he wasn't there, I don't know, she might have been worse off", he said.

The school will award Monfries a posthumous bachelor's degree.

"There are no words sufficient to describe the loss of someone so young and full of promise - and mere weeks from graduation". "Our hearts go out to Sydney's parents, and her family and friends-theirs is an unimaginable loss, and we share their grief".
