Men with beards are 'dirtier than dogs'

The research by the Hirslanden Clinic in Switzerland found that every sampled beard contained bacteria, and almost half had bugs that could be hazardous to human health.

What's worse, microbes found in seven of the men in the study posed a threat to human health.

Swiss scientists say there is a higher amount of bacteria lurking in beard bristles than in the fur of your dog.

They found that all of the bearded men, who were aged 18 to 76, had high microbial counts, while only 23 of the 30 dogs showed similarly high microbial presence.

After the MRI scans of the dogs, the scanners were disinfected.

Professor Andreas Gutzeit of the Hirslanden Clinic told the Daily Mail, "On the basis of these findings, dogs can be considered as clean compared with bearded men".

Bearded men have more bacteria in their beards than dogs have in their fur, according to a study out of Switzerland.

But Keith Flett, founder of the Beard Liberation Front, pooh-poohed the report, suggesting it's more about pogonophobia - the irrational fear of beards - than anything else.
