A prominent Perth DJ and community radio presenter has been arrested in San Francisco and charged with kidnapping a two-year-old boy as the child was walking along a street with his mother.

Citing local police, the San Francisco Chronicle states Roscoe Bradley Holyoake, 34, grabbed a two-year-old boy from his mother in the city's popular Castro District on Friday.

Officer Adam Lobsinger said that on Friday, a mother reported that a stranger tried to grab her son from the corner of Market and Noe streets about 12:25 p.m.

Walker, a dentist, said he and other bystanders had chased after Holyoake on foot.

"I think my fatherly instincts kicked in and I did what I thought was right", Mr Walker told KTVU.

Initial reports were quick to say that the suspect looked "clean cut", and Orphan Andy's owner Bill Piung said, "The suspect was someone you would never give a second look to".

She said she struggled with him and freed the boy from his grasp.

Holyoake appeared briefly in court Tuesday and was ordered to return Thursday to enter a plea.

Holyoake apparently hosts a radio show in addition to his DJ career, and he goes by the name DJ Roski.

Mr Olmo said he was yet to see any video evidence linking his client to the alleged attempted abduction.

He was also a board member of Pride WA for two years before standing down in February.

The 34-year-old was detained on a $700,000 bail and if convicted faces 10 years in jail.
