Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp down for hours Sunday morning

Facebook and its other platforms, Instagram and Whatsapp, have been down for a few hours after failures with the company's servers.

A Facebook spokesman apologised for the inconvenience. The last noteworthy incident happened in March, when access to Facebook was restricted for some 24 hours.

Facebook is pulling a feature that allowed users to send money to friends through its Messenger app nearly a year and a half after launching it in the UK. The issues affected users in Asia, Europe and the US, according to the site.

The website wouldn't refresh, and messages weren't coming through, from roughly 6:30 AM EDT (New York time) to about 9:30 AM.

A response from a Facebook representative reads, "Earlier today, some people may have experienced trouble connecting to the family of apps ..."

"Confirmed: Analysis of global network data shows Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger down globally for an estimated 60 percent of users; incident ongoing #FacebookDown", cybersecurity firm NetBlock.org tweeted. Social media apps like Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp are used every minute all over the globe by thousands of people making them the most impactful and appreciated applications globally.

The outage tracking website downdetector.com showed that there are more than 9000 people reporting issues with Facebook. "All Facebook services are down", said Daniel Chernenkov in Israel.
