The massive storm system that killed several people from Texas to MS is now barreling east, threatening to spawn tornadoes and other catastrophic weather from New England to the Gulf Coast.

Damage to the town's schools has prompted the Alto Independent School District has canceled all classes until its buildings have been found to be safe.

Heavy rains and storms raked the Magnolia State into the night, then moved into Alabama.

The National Weather Service was sending a survey team to Alto on Sunday to confirm if the storm was, indeed, a tornado. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Two people were hospitalized for injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening, while others were treated at the scene, Yezak said. The main severe weather threats will be damaging wind gusts, tornadoes and large hail. A tornado was reported in the area 140 miles (225 kilometers) southeast of Memphis, Tennessee, at the time.

Monroe County Road Manager Sonny Clay said at a news conference Sunday that a man was killed in Hamilton when a tree fell on his trailer.

There were reports of multiple injuries in the Robertson County town of Franklin, the NWS said, and CNN affiliate KWTX reported widespread damage there.

Power poles and trees were knocked over and parts of buildings were left hanging across utility lines in Troy, located about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Montgomery.

The roof of a hotel in New Albany, Mississippi, was damaged, although the cause was unclear. Trees were reported down in each location but there were no immediate reports of damage, injuries or fatalities.

The tree "flattened the auto like a pancake", said Capt. Alton Lenderman of the Angelina County Sheriff's Office.

A third child, Sebastian Omar Martinez, 13, drowned late on Saturday when he fell into a drainage ditch fill with flash floodwaters near Monroe, Louisiana, said Deputy Glenn Springfield of the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office.

Tornado watches are already in place across parts of the region and the potent storm system has already been producing strong tornadoes in eastern Texas.

"We'll be seeing severe weather from Florida to NY, with the most unstable parts so far in Georgia", said meteorologist David Roth of the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center. Franklin is about 125 miles (200 kilometres) south of Dallas.

The forecast of severe weather forced officials at the Masters in Augusta, Ga., to begin the tournament early Sunday, starting threesomes off the first and 10th tees on the day's final round in hopes of finishing in midafternoon before the winds and rains begin.
