It's unclear what title Griffin will hold, because, well, the two sides haven't agreed on that yet.

Danny Ferry had been the interim GM after the dismissal of Dell Demps in April, and he told ESPN earlier Friday that he had withdrawn from the process, citing a desire to keep his family grounded in their Atlanta home.

Griffin was the general manager of the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2014 until 2017, during which the franchise won the 2016 National Basketball Association championship.

Now that Griffin is the GM of the Pelicans, the first point of business he'll have is to get the disgruntled superstar out of New Orleans. The Cavaliers declined to renew his contract after the 2017 season.

Griffin also worked as an assistant GM role with the Cavs and in the Phoenix Suns' front office.

It will be interesting to see if Griffin follows that script going forward.

Although the Pelicans struggled this season, Gentry was commended by his players for his professionalism amid hard circumstances. He has gone 145-183 in the regular season and 5-4 in the playoffs.

In 2014-15, Griffin was named the NBA Executive of the Year.

"Sometimes there's coaches that you kind of feel like they're holding you back as a player and kind of restrict you, but I feel like he kind of just lets you go and figure it out yourself", Holiday said earlier this week. "Draft picks, an elite role player - somebody that could really further the cause for us as a victor because when you're bringing more young kids to the floor, you need those players to galvanize a group".

The Pelicans will have a number of other pressing roster matters as well.

The second-year shooter reportedly wouldn't mind a trade to New Orleans, for what it's worth.
