The fire began at 6:50 p.m. local time Monday, the Paris fire department said. French media reports added that the fire was started by accident, citing police sources.

The cathedral is in the process of a period of restoration, and in the past couple of days has had sixteen bronze statues removed from the roof area in recent days to facilitate work.

Its cause is not yet clear, but officials say it may be linked to renovation work.

It attracts millions of tourists every year.
