Extinction Rebellion: Environmental protests halt traffic

Extinction Rebellion (XR), an environmentalist group responsible for causing scenes in the House of Commons earlier this month when semi-naked activists stripped off in Parliament as MPs tried to debate Brexit, claim they intend to occupy the roads for at least 72 hours.

Waterloo Bridge is a major bus route and the protestors from the group Extinction Rebellion delayed the journeys of far more public transport users than the vehicle drivers they claim should switch to more sustainable modes.

A TfL spokesman said: "The safety of our customers and staff is our number one priority and we're working closely with the police to manage the impact on London's transport network".

"This will be a full-scale festival of creative resistance, with people's assemblies, art actions, stage performances, talks, workshops, food and family spaces", the group says on its website.

Marble Arch, Parliament Square and Piccadilly Circus have also been blocked in the protest, which aims to get the government to tell the truth about the extent of climate change, and take action.

"We are still in this position, and still facing this crisis", she said.

Thompson has previously said of the demonstrations: "It is time to stand up and save our home".

Demonstrators arrived at London's Hyde Park on Sunday, some having journeyed to the city on foot in recent weeks from various parts of the United Kingdom for what is described as an International Rebellion.

More than 80 cities in 33 countries will hold similar events in protest about environmental issues, they said.

While organisers encouraged people to set up camp in Hyde Park overnight into Monday, they have been warned they could be breaking the law by doing so is an offence under Royal Parks legislation.

Savannah, a protester for Extinction Rebellion, defended the protests and said the group want to start important conversations. No arrests have been made.

A Metropolitan police spokesperson declined to comment, other than to say an appropriate policing plan would be in place.
