Citi Bike shuts down e-bike fleet over brake issues

"Out of an abundance of caution, we are proactively removing the pedal-assist bikes from service", the companies said in respective statements.

About 3,000 Lyft bikes now in use in New York, Washington and San Francisco, are being removed.

Lyft, which went public in March, bought Citi Bike operator Motivate a year ago in a move to fend off competition from rival Uber Technologies Inc's purchase of electric cycle-sharing startup JUMP Bikes months before. Last year, Lyft acquired Motivate, the largest US bike-share company, which owns the Citi Bikes in New York City and the Capital Bikeshare in Washington D.C.

Updated electric bicycles which do not suffer the glitch are being prepared for deployment in the cities, she added. No date was given for when the replacements will be available.

The bug meant that the scooters suddenly applied the brakes when riders were travelling at full speed downhill.
