United Food & Commercial Workers union members out of sailors walked off the job, with some picketing out the stores. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., addresses striking Stop & Shop supermarket employees on the picket line on Friday, April 12, 2019, in Somerville, Mass.

Stop and Shop says they do have contingency plans in place to minimize the disruption for shoppers.

According to broadcast reports, the supervisors were keeping stores open and enabling customers to utilize self-checkout lanes.

In a statement posted on its website, Stop & Strike stated that it was disappointed with the strike since contract negotiations are ongoing with the assistance of federal mediators.

Grocery workers at Stop & Shop went on strike over wages and health care in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and CT on Thursday.

Stop & Shop, owned by parent company Ahold Delhaize, argues that it is the only large food retail chain in New England with a fully unionized workforce, and must compete with much larger, non-union stores operated by companies like Walmart, Whole Foods/Amazon and Costco.

"While Stop & Shop continues to propose drastically cutting worker benefits, Ahold shareholders voted on April 10 to give themselves an 11.1 percent raise in dividends over the past year", the union said in an emailed statement.
