Arsenal are believed to be interested in reuniting him with Unai Emery at the Emirates Stadium after Sven Mislintat's premature departure, but Sevilla are also in need of a sporting director after previous incumbent Joaquin Caparros took over as caretaker manager following Pablo Machin's sacking.

Monchi worked as the director of football at Sevilla for 17 years until 2017 and was in that role when Emery coached the team to three consecutive Europa League titles.

Monchi left Roma last week amid a restructure at the Italian club, following their disappointing exit to Porto in the Champions League.

Arsenal's hopes of hiring Monchi as their technical director have suffered a setback after Sevilla made a move to bring the Spaniard back to the club where he made his name.

Sevilla chief Castro said on Saturday: 'We are negotiating for the agreement with Monchi, because he is the best and we have to see the fit of the Seville project with the Monchi project.

"Our conversations have gone well with him, the conversations have been very receptive".

"We understand that the best one is Monchi and we have opened negotiations with him. The conversations have been very positive", Castro told reporters.
