The issue was discovered by the UK Vehicle Certification Agency, which informed Jaguar Land Rover.

Britain's largest vehicle maker said they will carry out free repairs on the models. The DVSA in turn notified the European Commission's rapid alert system. It is thought to be the first carbon dioxide-related recall for JLR. This is believed to involve a software update in most cases although some could require physical changes, including new tyres on the Evoque.

Affected models include some 2.0-litre 2016 to 2018 Land Rover Discovery and Discovery Sport models; certain 2.0-litre Range Rover Evoque, Sport, and Velar cars; and Jaguar E-Pace, F-Pace, F-Type, XE and XF cars. Both petrol and diesel models are included in the recall.

This recall comes after it was reported that the Land Rover Discovery TD6 outperformed a number of other cars in new independent pollution tests, revealing it produced low NOx. The most exciting version of JLR's 2.0-litre range produces 300hp in the F-Type P300 - although we're yet to learn whether that specific variant is included in the recall.

Emissions have come under more scrutiny since Volkswagen's diesel scandal.

In an official statement provided to PH, JLR said: "Jaguar Land Rover is conducting a voluntary recall following the identification of Carbon dioxide performance variability with certain Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles fitted with 2.0-litre diesel or petrol engines".

At the same time, global agreement on reducing greenhouse gas emissions prompted government to announce the ban of new fossil-fuel cars.

A statement from JLR reads: "The modifications will be made free of charge, and every effort will be made to minimize inconvenience to the customer".

JLR's recall is not likely to have a material impact on the auto maker's finances.
