Scholes has walked away from Boundary Park over claims of broken promises from his hometown team.

"It is with great regret I have chose to leave the club with immediate effect".

"It unfortunately became clear that I would not be able to operate as I intended and was led to believe prior to taking on the role", he added.

"I hoped to, at the very least, see out my initial 18 months as the manager of a club I've supported all my life".

Oldham were relegated from League One last season, and now sit in 14th place in the table.

A number of members of the "golden generation" of English football have moved into management in recent times, with Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard also taking their first jobs this season.

Scholes' resignation will be seen as a massive blow to the club and owner Abdallah Lemsagam, who, Revolution News understands, was prepared to back the former England global, despite only claiming one win in his first and only seven games in charge.

"We would like to place on record our thanks to Paul for his efforts during his spell in charge of the club and would like to wish him well for the future".

"The fans, players, my friends and family all knew how proud + excited I was to take this role".

But his first managerial job has ended in less auspicious circumstances.

Oldham and Paul Scholes have parted ways, with the former England player leaving his coaching role after just one month.
