The event at the electric auto company's Los Angeles design studio will give the public a first look at the vehicle, a hybrid between a auto and an SUV.

The company broke ground on the Shanghai factory in January and its CEO Elon Musk has said the firm aims to finish initial construction this summer and start production of the Model 3 towards the end of the year.

Tesla is set to unveil their highly anticipated electric Model Y compact SUV tonight, with CEO Elon Musk ready to showcase the company's latest vehicle.

First, let's talk about the name: Model Y. The names of Tesla's EV family were deliberate, and the Model 3 was initially supposed to be called the Model E. However, the threat of a lawsuit from Ford forced Tesla to change the name from Model E to Model 3.

"Model Y, being an SUV, is about 10 per cent bigger than Model 3, so will cost about 10 per cent more & have slightly less range for same battery", he said. That means if the Model Y is offered in a Standard Range, rear-wheel drive configuration like the Model 3, we should expect a starting price of around $38,500. Like the Model X, there also appears to be a small spoiler.

China's customs authority has lifted its suspension on imports of Tesla's Model 3, an official in the authority's news department told Reuters on Thursday.

Model Y will share 75 per cent of its parts with the Model 3 and will likely be built at Gigafactory 1 in Nevada.

Tesla will tonight unveil its attempt to break into the fast-growing "crossover" auto segment, revealing the highly anticipated Model Y.

Tesla is teasing the Model Y with an image of its blacked out silhouette to promote Thursday's reveal.
