Bencic improved to 5-0 in matches against the Top 10 this season, having beaten four Top 10 players to win the crown at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, and extended her season-long winning streak to 11 matches.

Naomi Osaka's Indian Wells Open title defence came to a shock end after the world number one was swept aside by Belinda Bencic in the fourth round.

"She was just playing so well ... there wasn't anything that I could do in that situation". "But I think now there is way too many videos and too many people have watched my matches". There were worrying signs for Osaka right from the start, netting a backhand to drop serve in the opening game and spraying a forehand error in game five to find herself 4-1 down.

"One of the biggest things is I wanted to be more mature", she said when asked how she has changed in the past year.

The Swiss double faulted at 5-2 to give one break of serve away but she blasted a backhand down the line return victor a few minutes later for a 6-3 and a massive momentum before the start of the decider. "But it's everything I could do today".

Her defeat means Osaka will retain her number one ranking, even though she couldn't pull off her first title defense.

Vondrousova, who beat 2018 runner-up Daria Kasatkina and former French Open victor Jelena Ostapenko on the way to the fourth round, will go for another big win when she faces sixth-seeded Elina Svitolina, who battled to a 7-6 (10/8), 5-7, 6-4 victory over Australian Ashleigh Barty.

Osaka, 21, said she lacked maturity when as a relative unknown player she won the tournament previous year to kick off her meteoric rise through the rankings.

Another teenager, unseeded Canadian Bianca Andreescu, upset 18th seed Wang Qiang of China 7-5, 6-2 to book her place in the quarters.

The win was 19-year-old Vondrousova's first over a top-10 player in six attempts.

Williams will fight for a semi-final berth against eighth-seeded Angelique Kerber, who beat ninth-seeded Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
