Rice's worldwide future has been the subject of much speculation since his breakthrough with West Ham and England manager Gareth Southgate held talks with the midfielder, in an effort to get him to switch from Ireland.

The West Ham United midfielder could even receive his first England call-up for next month's European Championship qualifiers against Czech Republic and Montenegro if Federation Internationale de Football Association ratifies his proposed change of nationality in time.

Rice was born and raised in London, but played for Ireland from the U-16 level all the way through the senior team, his eligibility coming from his Irish-born grandparents.

The 20-year-old added that he had reached this conclusion after discussions with those two worldwide managers, with the former Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill and with his family and friends.

"In recent weeks and months, I have discussed the situation with the people who mean the most to me". I have also spoken to Martin O'Neill and Mick McCarthy, Gareth Southgate and to friends and colleagues within the game whose opinion I respect. "Good luck to him". "I am truly grateful for the support I have received leading to this decision". "My pride at wearing the Irish shirt was always 100% genuine".

"I would also like to make it clear that, in requesting to transfer my national team representation, I am not taking for granted a call-up to the England squad or making any assumptions about my future worldwide career". It was a great honour for myself and my family, and something I will always cherish.

The decision represents a massive blow for Mick McCarthy and the Irish setup, as Rice has chose to turn his back on the Boys in Green and play for Southgate's England instead.

However, England approached Rice last summer and the West Ham star subsequently made himself unavailable for Ireland in order to consider his options.
