President Trump is expected to sign an executive order Monday outlining a national strategy for promoting the development of artificial intelligence, administration officials said.

"Artificial intelligence is something that touches every aspect of people's lives, from the way that they receive medical care to the way they grow or eat their food, to the way that energy is extracted throughout the country", an administration official said Sunday.

While an official American AI Initiative is a welcome move, those in the industry will be disappointed that the initiative doesn't actually include any new funding for AI development and is pretty light on details besides those laid out above. "What this initiative attempts to do is to bring all those together under one umbrella and show the promise of this technology for the American people".

It directs federal agencies to make data and computing resources more available to artificial intelligence experts while maintaining security and confidentiality.

Research and development: Federal funding agencies will be asked to "prioritize AI investments" in their allocations. The official also sought to allay concerns that investments in new AI technology may displace American workers, noting that the administration is "very cognizant of" the issue and has already developed programming like apprenticeships and career special education programs to address it. The aim of the new initiative is to boost AI development and funding in the US and also to ensure that America is a leader when it comes to helping shape global artificial intelligence policies.
