During a Fox Business segment, host Stuart Varney and Napolitano discussed Bezos' claims that the National Enquirer attempted to blackmail him by threatening to publish illicit photos of him and intimate text messages from his extramarital affair unless he halts an investigation into the tabloid.

The explicit material, which is the centre of a "blackmail" row between the world's richest man and the National Enquirer, was allegedly passed to the USA tabloid by Michael Sanchez.

"It was a source that was well known to both Mr. Bezos and Ms. Sanchez", he told Stephanopoulos.

Mr Bezos's investigators have suggested the Enquirer's coverage of his affair was driven by dirty politics.

Bezos is sometimes derided by Trump due to the fact that the Amazon CEO is also the owner of the Washington Post. The investigators have not said how they believe Michael Sanchez came into possession of his sister's intimate messages.

The brother, Michael Sanchez, is a supporter of Mr Trump and an acquaintance of Trump allies Roger Stone and Carter Page.

Bezos on Thursday accused American Media Inc (AMI), the Enquirer's owner, of trying to blackmail him with the threat of publishing "intimate photos" he allegedly sent to his girlfriend unless he said in public that the United States tabloid's reporting on him was not politically motivated. The source had provided information to the company for at least seven years, Elkan Abramowitz, an attorney for American Media Inc. chief executive David Pecker, said on ABC's "This Week".

He was asked if Mr Sanchez was the source and he said: "I'm not permitted to tell you or confirm or deny who the source is".

The battle between the National Enquirer and Bezos went nuclear when the outlet published a lengthy expose piece on his affair that it proudly presented as its "largest investigation" ever. The Daily Beast is reporting that Michael Sánchez, Lauren Sánchez's brother, is suspected as the source of the leak. "We have turned our conclusions over to our attorneys for referral to law enforcement", he told the outlet Sunday, but declined giving further details. Ben-Veniste had served as special prosecutor during the Watergate scandal. A private investigator hired by Mr Bezos to identify the source of the leak said he had passed his findings to the police.
