Ariana Grande - who had a public falling out with the night's executive producer, Ken Ehrlich, earlier this week over her choice of song, a year after Lorde was denied the opportunity to perform during the telecast - won best pop vocal album for Sweetener.

Pop royalty Gaga meanwhile won an award in the visual media group for her heart-pounding hit "Shallow" of the blockbuster film "A Star Is Born", and another for best pop solo performance for "Joanne".

They are both up for album of the year, alongside Cardi B, H.E.R., Post Malone and Janelle Monae.

Gaga, Carlile, Monae, Cardi B and Musgraves are all due to take the stage. "I am such a misfit", Carlile said, speaking about the difficulties of coming out as a lesbian in her teen years and never attending school dances.

Kendrick Lamar and Drake lead this year's nominations, with eight and seven respectively. I sang that version in one take, & poured my entire life & soul into it. Thank you so much for this gift I am completely shocked. Women also have a strong presence in those top categories, including Lady Gaga, SZA, Maren Morris and Ella Mai. This marks yet another rough year for the Grammys.

In the Best New Artist category, 6 of the 8 nominees are women.

Grammy organisers this year expanded the top four categories - album, record, song of the year, and best new artist - to eight nominees from five in a bid to diversify the contest. "I hope you do, dad".

Six of the best new artist nominees are women, including H.E.R., Chloe x Halle, Margo Price, Dua Lipa, Bebe Rexha and Jorja Smith.

"I know i'm not there tonight (trust, i tried and still truly wished it had worked out tbh) and i know i said i try not to put too much weight into these things. but (expletive). this is wild and lovely. thank you so much", she tweeted after learning about her win.

When asked soon after the show about the lack of female winners, academy president Neil Portnow said women needed to "step up" - now-infamous words that instantly drew outrage, and which he said were taken out of context. A representative for the Grammys didn't return an email seeking clarification about the tribute. Taylor Swift, who was snubbed and scored one nomination, also won't be at the show. Although the rapper has declined the prospect of performing during this year's Grammy Awards ceremony, his name will be called upon several times during the festivities. There will be awkward moments, but a planned tribute to Aretha Franklin, which will be performed by Yolanda Adams, Fantasia and Andra Day, had better be one to remember.
