SEATTLE-Residents of the Pacific Northwest took to neighborhood hills with skis, sleds or even just laundry baskets February 9 to celebrate an unusual dump of snow in a region more accustomed to winter rain.

The sun was out but the National Weather Service said snow would return late in the afternoon into the evening across the Northwest.

Snowfall amounts will range from an inch to 3 inches (2.5 centimeters to 7.6 centimeters) through Sunday night, on top of the foot that has already accumulated over the weekend in some areas.

There can be a rapid freeze-up in the lower Ohio Valley later Tuesday as temperatures plunge behind the rain, causing any lingering wet areas to turn to ice.

The National Weather Service is predicting southern Minnesota will be visited by another snow storm on Sunday and that could be followed by a major storm early next week.

Other parts of the country were also wrestling with hard weather. And wouldn't you know it, the city's canine residents can't get enough.

Gov. Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency, saying everyone in the state should focus on staying safe.

About 50,000 residents are said to have lost power across the state, USA media report.

More than a foot of snow (30.5 cm) was recorded in some areas, including on the Olympic Peninsula. Hundreds of people in Tacoma turned out for a snowball fight in a park after someone suggested it on Facebook.

Elsewhere, more than 148,000 customers lost power in MI following days of freezing rain. The Consumers Energy utility said power would be restored by late Sunday. And forecasters say we could see even more snow later in the week.

Residents in Seattle cleared out grocery store shelves and left work early on Friday afternoon as the storm arrived.

"I love it. I'm excited about it", she said of the snow.

But more snow was possible for the region by midweek, the report said. The advisory also includes most of the Twin Cities metro.
