Baby rescued from storm water drain

The little girl had been dumped in Newlands East.

Passerbys are believed to have heard the baby's cries and alerted authorities on Monday morning.

"Durban fire department has been down the manhole and has visuals of the actual baby quite far down the pipe".

Cllr De Boer said some residents told her that they heard the baby crying as early as 1am and thought it was cats mating.

Three hours after first getting the call one of the rescuers shouted up that he had the baby girl and that she was still alive and she was pulled up and out to safety.

Medics said she may be suffering from hypothermia but otherwise appeared unhurt.

Rising Sun Overport reports that Rescue Care paramedics together with Metro Search and Rescue and the eThekwini Fire Department worked fervently on the corner of Barracuda Road and Herring Circle in Newlands East to rescue the infant. "Our miracle baby was taken out of the drain alive, looking healthy and strong", a relieved Cox said.

"Currently she is in a stable condition and the KZN EMS helicopter is now taking off to get the child to the hospital", said McKenzie.

THE newborn baby who was trapped in a storm water drain has been rescued and is a stable condition. The community was also very supportive and helpful which was great'.

"This matter will have to be investigated, to find the parents", he added.
