For the first time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can provide real-time estimates of the impact of flu on the public.

Flu season typically runs through May. People older than 65, children younger than 5 and people with chronic health conditions are particularly vulnerable to flu complications even in a less-severe year.

Meanwhile, four people have died of the flu so far this season in IN, according to the state's department of health.

Indiana has now recorded its fourth influenza-related death of the 2018-19 season, according to the Indiana State Department of Health's weekly influenza report.

The flu sent at least 13 people to the hospital in the last week.

While states such as California and North Carolina have seen significant numbers of flu-related deaths this season, USA health officials said Friday that the nationwide impact of influenza seems to be milder than last winter. This year, the season is unwrapping slower than those last year.

The CDC has no estimate of deaths so far this season, partly because it's so early. Adult sicknesses and deaths are estimated. In the past, CDC provided these estimates at the end of each flu season.

Statewide, 331 people have been hospitalized due to flu complications, including 38 in Oklahoma County, according to the Oklahoma State Department of Health.

"People get lulled into the idea that [influenza] is not as serious as it can be, especially for those most vulnerable", Dr. Russell said. Fewer than half of Americans ever do.

If you haven't gotten a flu shot, it's not too late. People might also get flu by touching a contaminated surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth or nose.

"We know the vaccine reduces outpatient visits, hospitalizations, ICU admissions and can be lifesaving in children", Fry said.

Quick treatment can save lives, the CDC said.
