He said: 'Personally always feel that Dhoni batting at No. 4 will be ideal for the team but we have got Rayudu who has done really well now at No. 4.

"We believe that Rayudu is the right person to capitalise because he's experienced and he has won many games for his state and in IPL cricket", Virat Kohli said before the ODI series against West Indies late previous year. The report cited concerns about the legality of the 33-year-old off-spinner's bowling action.

Ball-tracking replays confirmed the ball was pitching outside leg stump, however Rayudu had already wasted India's only review.

In the half-century at the SCG, his first since making 65 against Sri Lanka in December 2017, Dhoni faced 63 dot balls out of his 96 deliveries.

Speaking after the defeat, Sharma suggested former India skipper Dhoni should be promoted up the batting order.

Sharma blasted 133 off 129 balls in a courageous effort to keep India in the contest, while Jhye Richardson took four for 26 for Australia. "The ball might have started to reverse a little, we got hit into the stands a few times which might have helped scuff up the ball".

'So it's a good sign for us that he showed he can come out and bat any time the team wants him to bat.

"It is a learning for us. when we go to Adelaide we might have a chat about how we go about that".

The area where Rohit thought there was more need to take notice was around losing the three early wickets that left India well behind the game. "But we've still got a lot of white-ball cricket between now and then", Richardson said. "We don't think about these decisions once they have happened, and you can not always be right".

"We knew we can put some of the bowlers under pressure". But it is important to use the DRS well and we've spoken a lot about it.

The Australian openers - Aaron Finch and Alex Carey could have shown a bit more application as runs were there for the taking if they had chose to give themselves some more time.

"We believe in (Ravindra) Jadeja to play those cameo innings when required but the asking rate was way too much when he came to bat".
