Golden State Warriors center DeMarcus Cousins will be included in the starting lineup immediately when he is able to make his season debut after being sidelined for almost a year, coach Steve Kerr said on Thursday.

Kerr didn't rule out the possibility that Cousins could start in a January 16 game against his old team the Pelicans.

While there's no doubt this team is still the favorite to repeat, Jason Smith thinks Steve Kerr is looking for someone to light a fire under them, and the return of DeMarcus Cousins could be that flame. "I'll start him. After that, everything's on the table". We'll have to play around with him - the minutes, the combinations, the sets.

Head coach Kerr confirmed that Cousins will play from the start in his comeback game, yet there will be work to be done with a player unlike any the team have had before.

Kerr opened up Thursday about the challenges Cousins has had to overcome, saying he has "a lot of compassion" for what the center has been through. "A life-changing amount of money". All of a sudden I'm in Golden State, on the mid-level for one year, watching everyone else play basketball?' That's not easy. "So that he's through that barrier, and assuming everything goes well the next week or two, that's sort of the idea to get him in some time that week".

"So we've tried to help him though that. The last couple weeks, his overall happiness just seems better. He's in a better place".

In parts of eight seasons split between the Sacramento Kings and New Orleans Pelicans, Cousins has averaged 21.5 points, 11 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game.
