In a tweet, Missouri State Highway Patrol stated they had responded to 221 calls for assistance and urged residents to remain at home to prevent further crashes.

"We have a strong snowstorm that's stretching 1,400 miles from Kansas to the East Coast", CNN meteorologist Haley Brink said. By Jan. 12, at least 11 inches had accumilated in the region, and it was still coming down.

Gia has most of the midwest in a winter storm warning, with anticipated snowfall ranging from 3 inches to more than a foot.

"There's snow time like Showtime", the Chiefs said on Twitter, sharing video of the team's quarterback Patrick Mahomes arriving at the stadium in the snow.

Washington, where many federal government offices are closed due to the USA government shutdown, is expected to receive 15 cm to 20 cm of snow from this storm, according to the National Weather Service. Major cities in the zone, including St. Louis, could get more than 6 inches of snow. Snow is covering roads and making driving unsafe. Gia, which is what The Weather Channel is calling it, should produce heavy snow and some ice accumulation in the Rockies and more than 1,000 miles eastward to Philadelphia and New Jersey.

More heavy rain also will fall on the already-saturated South.

In Kansas City, Missouri, 7 inches of snow was reported early Saturday afternoon.

And in IN snow accumulations of 5 to 7 inches are expected between midnight Friday and 7 a.m. Sunday in portions of central, south central, southeastern, southwestern and west central Indiana. The Southeast has seen abundant precipitation in December and January, and the additional rain could put a strain on already-high rivers. "More cancellations are likely on Saturday and Sunday", airport officials said.

The University of Missouri men's basketball game at the University of SC was also canceled Saturday because of weather-related travel problems, the team tweeted.
